Description

This is a game about places over time.

Remember that places have memory- that what has happened here is always, in some small or big way, written into the walls, the stones, or the future of the people who continue to live here.

Fundamentally, this is a game about the echoes and traces we leave for others after we are gone.

The Ground Itself is a one-shot cooperative storytelling game. Gather a group with a soft spot for nostalgia and a curiosity about the future and choose a place. Any place, any size – a city corner, a quiet canyon, a newly constructed building. Using common game accessories, you’ll zoom into your place across time, landing days apart or watching thousands of years pass. As you enumerate how your place changes, you’ll reflect on existence, importance, and how wild it is that – in the grand scheme of things – we are both insignificant and infinite.

The Ground Itself is, essentially, an introspective, interactive ‘time passing’ film trope – day and night speed up, seasons change in the blink of an eye, plants grow and wither, buildings scrape the sky and tumble into ruin. Play it with your usual game crew, or get weird and recruit a collection of creatives – writers, theater people, history buffs, students in class – and surprise yourselves with the story you tell.
