The Cold Dark is a solo survival-horror journaling RPG built on Pandion Games’ Hints and Hijinx system. In the wilderness, though, there is no mystery to solve, no clues to find. Instead, your goal is to stay alive long enough to stand against the Beast. Travel to a variety of locations, overcoming obstacles and gathering supplies. Use two skills – Survival and Awareness – to tackle challenges. Succeed, and add useful items to your pack. Fail, and become stressed, ill, and weak. What’s out there to find? Odd omens, dangerous wild animals, thin ice, and imminent avalanches. Protein bars, heating pads, a morale-boosting doggy pal, even a chainsaw.
In The Cold Dark, blessings and curses are a roll of the dice or a flip of a playing card away. All the while, the great Beast stalks you. It follows your trail through the woods. You hear it getting closer. Face it down when you’re ready – or when you’re out of other options. Luck is helpful, but preparation is better.
