Well, you’re gonna try. Full of graphic novel-worthy images, diagrams, and maps, this is a well-appointed game book. You’ll find 10 sectors to explore, 12 cosmically horrific creatures, 36 clues, and 120 events and encounters. Action is driven by the Breathless system, in which a handful of polyhedral dice and a deck of playing cards determine a character’s success or failure. Once you’ve explored, documented, and encountered to your heart’s content, it’s time to formulate The Last Hypothesis. Find out who will win: a group of determined humans in exosuits or The Anomaly.
Substratum Protocol was purpose-built with a variety of players in mind. If you’re keeping to yourself, pick from two solo modes: quick and focused Hints and Hijinx-style or freeform, multiplayer-inspired rules designed just for this game. For intrepid, world-saving groups, Substratum Protocol can accommodate up to six players (plus Mission Control, your GM).
