Description
Soul Cemetery is a solo horror TTRPG about how media changes us, how media changes with us, and how we change media by interacting with it, told through the lens of replaying a survival horror classic from your childhood.
Welcome home (ominous).
You’re dealing with a family emergency in the house where you grew up. In your childhood bedroom, you notice your old console, your Dreamware Entertainment System. It still contains what was once your favorite past time: Soul Cemetery, a video game about a detective fighting evil spirits while she confronts her past (rated M for Mature).
Is Soul Cemetery, the video game, real? No, it’s fictional. Is Soul Cemetery the solo RPG zine real? Oh yes. And you can play!
Soul Cemetery (the zine) is a survival horror RPG, a surreal, analog emulator. Spin up that proverbial ol’ disc and guide Detective Hashford through classic levels filled with mysteries, challenges, and enemies. Visit, then re-visit locations. Answer prompts and react as scenes change. All the while, your character is coming to grips with their own return home. Something is different. Certainly they’re different but… is the game different, too? Is the game… changing?
With screen shots, diagrams, and plenty of text-based story progression, Soul Cemetery faithfully captures Gamecube-era polygonal horror vibes. And like any proper early 2000s video game, you can even listen to the soundtrack while you play. Good luck.
Playing
When you open Soul Cemetery and words are there, you are playing Soul Cemetery. Turn pages to read more and close the game to stop reading, but play never ends.
