A world just as conscious but unlike our own exists. This set of six zines illustrates the mechanisms of a world where humans are not the creators of thought, merely the vessels to receive it. The real thought—the real intelligence—is produced by the planet, by the living network that creeps beneath the landscape. It is an intelligence alien to us, yet not altogether unfamiliar. How does this assimilation affect the humans involved, and at what point do they stop being human?
Mycoplanetia is an ephemeral, vibes-forward zine project from student artists Ian Zotter-Barlow & Quinn Gall. Even though they are not game zines in any fashion, these zines stood out to us a imaginative and striking exercise in world-building that we felt our audience would enjoy.
Created for Reed Zine Fest, it is comprised of six vibrantly colorful risoprinted mini-comics written partially in english and partially in other, imagined languages. On a technical level, all the art is hand-drawn, with color layers originally drawn on vellum (as opposed to using digital layers, as is common with risograph art.) This technique adds to the retro-fever-dream aesthetic of the zines, which depict strange an disconcerting journeys on a mushroom planet. The overall effect is something like Scavenger’s Reign or Solaris by way of 80s-era underground comix.
