Imagine, perhaps, a magical machine that makes playing card decks. Now imagine that machine being operated by some sort of mad playing card scientist. In a frenzy, they toss inspiration into the machine’s input: Alice in Wonderland, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Rococo Fashion. Cackling feverishly, they crank all the settings on the machine up to the maximum: fully-illustrated, laser cut slip case, foil detailing, dual variations. As the sparks settle and smoke clears, the resultant product is revealed: two decks of playing cards that are exquisite, strange, and vaguely alarming.
In a word, these cards are baroque. They are decorated with such relentless fervor that it feels almost dizzying. When the slipcase is closed, the woman on the front of the box is wearing a beautiful masquerade mask. When you slide the slipcase open, the woman removes the mask. Inside said slipcase, an iridescent foil pattern sparkles through, otherwise hidden away. These cards feel like an artifact from another world, or perhaps a treasure locked away in the case of an oddities shop that you swore wasn’t there yesterday.
