Inscrutable Cities is a fabulist solo role-playing games about a traveler from a faraway land who has arrived within an impossible city, whose beauty and strangeness you seek to capture in your journal as you explore and travel through this magical metropolis. All you need to play is a journal, a pencil, and a coin to flip at the fork in the road.
It falls somewhere between “lyric table-top role play,” “interactive fanfiction,” and “guided meditation from an alternate universe.”
Travel is inherently magical. It stokes our curiosity, our wonder. It launches us out of our comfort zones, immerses us in new rhythms, allows us to learn about ourselves as we learn about others. Inscrutable Cities is a solo journaling RPG that contains all the tools you need to imagine and explore fabulous places. Places-between-places, other worlds. Magical places, busy, wild, and strange. Chart your own path through bustling crowds, encounter unfamiliar flora and fauna, and observe the ebb and flow of dream-worlds.
Inscrutable Cities (this RPG!) is creator Julian K. Jarboe’s homage to Invisible Cities (Italo Calvino’s 1972 work of experimental fiction). Like the original novel, in which Marco Polo describes visiting fifty-five awe-inspiring locations, Inscrutable Cities is imagination fuel. You’ll wander, discover, meander, meditate, and muse. Unlike the novel, you will not name places after “beautiful women,” nor fixate on these hypothetical women’s bodies. Inscrutable Cities: it’s excellent surrealist vibes with none of the pervasive 1970’s sexism!
