Description
You thought it would be as simple as pouring yourself a midnight bowl of cereal and eating it. It began as it always does: A few steps to the kitchen. The snap of the fridge opening and the rustle of colorful cereal in a plastic bag. The gentle glug of milk. A quick bite and back to whatever you were up to before, you thought.
You thought wrong.
The quiet patter of otherworldly feet. A distant, plaintive yowl. A creature with too many eyes and a sleepless hunger oozes from the walls and wriggles into a familiar shape. It smells your intent. It hears the sound of every spoonful. It whets its appetite on the mere possibility of your food. It hungers for your loops, and its craving will not be denied.
“Cute horror-comedy” is an underrated genre. In movies, there might be puppets and songs. In games, you get I Crave the Loop, a solo soulslike TTRPG in which you must protect the integrity of your midnight snack – your beloved Loops – from the bottomless maw of a many-eyed cat(ish) Creature. Use a d6 and two stats, FLEE and FEAST, to move through the map. FLEE to stay ahead of your pursuer. FEAST to take a bite of your Loops. A FEAST action also activates the game’s food-based countdown mechanic (you take a bite of your IRL snack). Finish said IRL snack before your otherworldly foe catches up to your character to win.
Alas, there are no puppets and no songs here. You do, however, get to eat a bowl of cereal (or trail mix or a cookie or, hell, a whole damn charcuterie) and giggle about being stalked by an eldritch horror! You’ll also enjoy a charming cereal box-themed layout, snack-fast play, and fully-loaded maps. Every map represents a place where snacks can be found – dorms, apartments, houses – and includes the snack nexus (fridge or cabinet, where you start), inter-dimensional Cat Doors (where the Creature slips into our dimension), helpful items (laser pointers, newly sentient – but protective – inanimate objects), and unique passives. Designed as a solo game but play duet-mode with one snacker and one Creature!
- 52-page color zine, 5.5″ x 8.5″
- Includes a unique “snack clock” mechanic to be used with actual food you’re eating (10 bites = easy mode, 15 = standard, 20 or more = hard)
- Requires a midnight snack, 2-5 d6 dice, tokens to represent yourself/your snack/The Creature, and a pencil/eraser to mark your maps
- Comes with plenty of maps, but even more maps can be found here
