Description

You see their shadow through the sights of your rifle. You remind yourself to breathe, to just be patient. Eventually, they’ll shift, and you will finally be rid of this monster forever. You breathe again, your finger tight against the trigger, when you hear a second breath exhale behind you.

HUNT[ER/ED] is a storytelling duet for one monster and one monster hunter. Decide the specifics of your world and your characters, then let the hunt begin! Game revolves around a combination of head-to-head dice rolling punctuated by story prompts. Players roll, re-roll, and re-roll their pairs of dice, racing one another until someone lands a double. This is a victory. The push-and-pull of a five-space progress bar tracks victories for the monster and the hunter, each attempting to move a token all the way off the board to win.

Card draws flesh out the story between clashes. Both monster and monster hunter reflect on their pasts and discover surprising information during the hunt. The monster recalls the first time a human recoiled from them. The hunter stumbles across the monster’s den and is shocked to discover something. The monster knows they could end the ‘hunt’ quickly but something is making them draw it out. The hunter considers what they would lose if they fail.

Game includes rules for play using a two-player hook-and-ring game in place of dice. The race (and tension) of players swinging their rings until one catches on its hook replaces rolling for doubles. Game also includes ACCEPT(deny), solo variant rules by Elliot Davis. Instead of a versus-style hunt, the game becomes an internal struggle within a being who is both monster and hunter. As the token moves back and forth across the board, it indicates your character either embracing their dual nature or fully denying it.

  • 53 pages, A5-size
  • Requires a standard deck of playing cards, four d6 dice (two per person), a token, a pen, and paper OR – instead of dice, token, paper, and pen – a hook-and-ring-game
  • Created for duet play but includes a solo option, ACCEPT(deny) by Elliot Davis
  • Content note from the creator: HUNT(er/ed) is a game that deals heavily with conflict, pursuit, and violence – with the very real possibility that it will end in death for one of the characters
