Perhaps your knowledge of sentai media – color-coded, masked, monster-fighting heroes – comes from the genre’s American adaptation, Power Rangers. Or perhaps you – like the creators of Henshin! – are familiar with all 47 iterations of Japan’s prolific Super Sentai series, from the very first 84-episode run in 1975 to the newest, insect-themed squad whose adventures began last March. Power Rangers fans, Super Sentai fans, and absolutely everyone else, rejoice! Henshin! is a TTRPG that gives you all the tools you’ll need to tell your own stories of bravery, friendship, and alien ass-kicking.
In Henshin!, players create a Color using playbooks to generate a character true to tropes in the sentai genre, with someone serving as the Narrator to guide the episodic story.
Players give and take Tokens, instead of Dice, to engage in character mechanics called Turns, adding to a collaborative story of often-flawed young heroes who summon the strength and use teamwork to beat the odds.
At the end of each episode, Colors may advance in the form of a Raise that represents personal growth or a strengthened arsenal, whether at the end of a satisfying single two-hour session or during the several play sessions that make up a full series season.
