With the explosive growth of tabletop gaming, the Deck of Player Safety (DOPS) was created to ensure all participants, whether they are good friends or complete strangers, have a fast and anonymous method to signal common, hot-button topics they want to exclude from their gaming experience.
Easy, anonymous, and very, very quick, the Deck of Player Safety does the hard work so everyone can have a good time at the table. It works like this:
Before the game begins…
✅ All players receive an instructions card.
✅ The GM hands the Deck of Player Safety to a player, who scans the cards and picks anything they wish to exclude, ranging from common stuff (like torture and snakes) to more specific topics (like a current event or in-world issues). If the player feels comfortable with all the topics in the deck, they pick a card that says “Anything Goes.”
✅ The player places their card(s) facedown in front of them, passing the deck to the next person. (This is the process outlined on the instructions card.)
✅ Once everyone has reviewed the deck and drawn cards, the GM receives their players’ choices, shuffles them, and reviews them with table.
The whole process takes 2-5 minutes. No one knows who picked what (not even the GM) and everyone can begin the game with important parameters established! Magic. Great for convention-style play between relative strangers as well as games with old pals. Remember: we don’t always know the serious stuff that happens in our friends’ lives. You might not even realize you’ve got something to exclude until you see it!
