DAISY CHAINSAW is a game of magical girls, cosmic threats, and saving the world one episode at a time. Players roleplay as magical girls—teenagers with special powers living a double life. The transformation sequence is the split between a Main Character being a regular person and someone truly magical. The transformation sequence turns them into their magical persona, strong enough to deal with the big bad of the season. What happens to an MC when they transform can easily transfer to their everyday lives, whether that is a permanent scar or the horrifying ordeal of discovery.
If you’re familiar with magical girl anime where violence is both question and answer, you will feel right at home in Daisy Chainsaw.
Let me explain the hook of Daisy Chainsaw, one that the description above doesn’t totally convey (although the pixel art illustrations make it much clearer.)
You remember Sailor Mercury? And she had an attack that she would use all the time called Bubble Blast (Wait, you don’t remember this? Your back doesn’t hurt? You don’t disassociate when someone tells you 1995 was 30 years ago?) where a bunch of beautiful rainbow bubbles would appear and mysteriously damage the enemy of the week? Ok, cool, we’re on the same page now. See, the question Daisy Chainsaw asks is what if instead of that, Sailor Mercury’s main attack was called something like Hyper Chain Shred, and instead of bubbles magically hurting the bad guy, she just whipped out a magic chainsaw and went to town dismembering her foes? Neat, right?
Daisy Chainsaw is traditional GM’d game with the concept: classic magical girls + splatter horror. Characters in Daisy Chainsaw are regular high schoolers with regular lives, until they summon their magical weapons and brutalize the other-worldly foes that pester their sleepy town. Character classes are what weapon your magical uses. Are you into knives? Roller skates? Brass Knuckles? Or the classic Chainsaw? There’s a grid-based, tactical, d6 combat system designed for mowing down swaths of goons and bosses alike. There’s a chart for determining what sort of cute mascot creature has collected your group of ragtag friends together and why. All of this is brought together by the retro-inspired pixel art which give the whole book a “rental game on a hidden shelf in the back of a video kingdom” vibe.
If you’re into some retro, weeb-flavored violence, and looking for a system that offers both high-school drama and tactical combat, Daisy Chainsaw might be the ticket for you.
