Description
They are alone, seeking a secret place. They are dead set on getting there.
Black Mass is a roleplaying game about two people leaving a community that doesn’t want them, to the woods that calls for them. Those travelers, Lydia and Catherine, confront their pasts to seek their own black mass, a moment of transformation, to put the tools of change into their own hands.
As an object, Black Mass feels like a book you found locked in the basement of a university library, or perhaps recommended to you by the owner of a used bookstore that you swore was right here just a few days ago. A book that immediately radiates forbidden energy when you pick it up. Spartan type-setting combined with unsettling black and white illustrations and moody photography give the book a truly witchy feel.
As a game, Black Mass carries that deeply spooky energy and delivers a truly unique and ritual-like experience. The game revolves around the lives of two witches, Lydia and Catherine, who are fleeing their community and entering the woods. Players take on the roles not of the witches themselves, but of “personas” or aspects of the witches’ personalities, using tarot cards to ruminate on their pasts and guide them forward, eventually culminating in the titular Black Mass.
